The Youth Sports Coaches' Preseason Checklist
Volunteer coaching youth sports is a heroic act. Let's make sure we're ready to for the challenge!
1. Review and Prepare:
- Familiarize yourself with the rules, regulations, and age-appropriate guidelines of the sport.
- Understand the objectives and goals for your season.
- Finalize your roster.
2. Organize Administrative Tasks:
- Obtain required certifications and clearances (background checks, coaching courses, first aid, CPR, etc.).

3. Communicate with Parents:
- Set up a team communication app for the season.
- Send a welcome email to parents with details how to join the app.

4. Equipment Check:
- Check equipment to ensure safety and functionality.
- Order necessary equipment and supplies.
5. Safety First:
- Inspect and ensure the safety of playing fields, facilities, and equipment.
- Prepare a basic first aid kit and have a plan for addressing injuries.
- Educate yourself about concussion protocols and ensure players and parents are aware too.
6. Player Assessments:
- Evaluate players' skill levels and fitness to determine appropriate groupings and strategies.
- Consider strengths and weaknesses to plan drills and training sessions.

- Teach mindfulness and stress-relief techniques.
12. Game Strategies:
- Develop game plans that consider opponents' strengths and weaknesses.
- Teach players about different game situations and tactics.
13. Regular Assessments:
- Continuously evaluate players' progress and adjust training plans accordingly.
- Seek feedback from assistant coaches, parents, and players to improve your coaching methods.
14. Positive Coaching:
- Praise effort and improvement, not just outcomes.
- Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to boost players' confidence.
- Be prepared to adapt and adjust plans based on unexpected situations or changes.
